The Restoration of Dowanvale

Dowanvale Free Church opened in 1880 and was designed by Alexander Petrie. In recent years the building started to show its age but in 2005 it was designated a Category ā€˜C’ listed building by Historic Scotland.

In 2004 the main sanctuary was renewed. This involved removing the suspended false ceiling which had been in place since 1969, restoring the original ceiling, renewing all upholstery and painting the interior. The glazing was also partly renewed.

From 2006 to 2007 attention turned to restoring the exterior of the church. Austin-Smith:Lord LLP were engaged as project architects and the works were carried out by Cumming & Co with Poole Dick engaged as Quantity Surveyors. This major project addressed dilapidated and in some places dangerous stonework, renewal of the church roof, and installation of cast-iron gutters and downpipes. Failing stone was removed and new stone inserted (in a process known as indenting) and all pointing replaced with a breathable lime-based mortar.
