Welcome to Dowanvale Free Church of Scotland

Welcome to the Dowanvale website

Our church is located in the heart of Glasgow’s vibrant West End.  We’re located at the junction of Dowanhill Street and Chancellor Street, just off Byres Rd, and we are easily accessible by bus or subway (Kelvinhall Station). As you can see elsewhere on the website, our building has been extensively renovated and refurbished over the last few years.

The congregation of Dowanvale dates from October 2000 became vacant in February 2011. Our interim moderator is the Rev Alex Cowie of Partick Free Church. Our congregation is currently overseen by eight elders and five deacons, and consists of a healthy mix of age groups, with a strong student base drawn from Glasgow’s many colleges and universities - including Glasgow University just up the road – and a good number of families with an ever-growing number of children.  Part of our congregation worships in Paisley, where they take part in our Sunday services via a live web link.

Aside from the regular pulpit instruction every Sunday, which is now available to download from this website, the weekly Prayer Meeting and Bible Study gives opportunity for fellowship as well as united prayer and an exposition from the Bible.  Further teaching is available on Sunday for all children up to the age of 15, and a youth fellowship after the evening service is run for those from secondary school, student age and upwards. There are crèche facilities as well and, as you navigate around the site, you will find information on all of these. There is a regular monthly congregational fellowship, normally on the first Sunday evening of the month, and a monthly Gaelic service usually on the second Thursday of the month. Of course, website information can only scratch the surface of the true work of any congregation and Dowanvale has a lively and busy fellowship at both formal and informal levels.

As indicated above, you will also find information on the history of the building and some photographs will help to tell the story of the exciting redevelopment of its interior and exterior. This redevelopment and modernisation allows our congregation to reach out more effectively to the surrounding community with the message of the Bible and functions as an ideal setting for various outreach activities. These include such things as informal Christianity Explored courses, and the Dowanvale Café which is open every Saturday from 12 noon to 3.00pm. In the autumn of 2008, we launched the Dowanvale Free Time Youth Club, which is open to all nine to sixteen year-olds within our neighbourhood and meets in the hall of our church, which is accessed via the door on Chancellor Street, on Monday evenings at 7pm.

Our aim in Dowanvale is to proclaim the message given by God in the Bible so that people will come to know Jesus Christ themselves and be built up and strengthened in that knowledge.

Finally, if you are just passing through, you are warmly invited to join with us in worship.
