Message from the Rev Kenneth Stewart
Welcome to a re-vamped Dowanvale website! Our church is located in the heart of Glasgow’s vibrant West End at the junction of Dowanhill Street and Chancellor Street, just off Byres Rd and easily accessible by bus or subway (Kelvinhall Station). As you can see elsewhere on the website, the building has been extensively renovated and refurbished over the last few years.
The congregation of Dowanvale dates from October 2000 and the present Minister, Rev Kenneth Stewart, was inducted there in June 2001. The congregation is currently overseen by eight elders and six deacons and consists of a healthy mix of age groups with a strong student base drawn from Glasgow’s many colleges and universities - including Glasgow University just up the road – and a good number of families with an ever-growing number of children!
Aside from the regular pulpit instruction every Sunday, which is now available to download from this site, the weekly Prayer Meeting and Bible Study gives opportunity for fellowship as well as united prayer and an exposition of (usually) a New Testament letter. Further teaching is available on Sunday for all children up to the age of 15, and a youth fellowship after the evening service is run for those of secondary age and upwards. There are crèche facilities as well and, as you navigate around the site, you will find information on all of these. There is a regular monthly congregational fellowship, normally on the first Sunday evening of the month, and a monthly Gaelic service usually on the second Thursday of the month. Of course, website information can only scratch the surface of the true work of any congregation and Dowanvale has a lively and busy fellowship at both formal and informal levels.
As indicated above, you will also find information on the history of the building and some photographs will help to tell the story of the exciting redevelopment of its interior and exterior. This redevelopment and modernisation will allow the congregation to reach out more effectively to the surrounding community with the message of the Bible and will function as an ideal setting for various outreach activities. These activities will include such things as informal Christianity Explored courses and monthly outreach lunches for the community.
Our aim in Dowanvale is to proclaim the message given by God in the Bible so that people will come to know Jesus Christ themselves and be built up and strengthened in that knowledge.
